Gig Economy News

Hey everyone! Here are the week’s latest news on the gig economy!

  1. More people earn money in the gig economy than the number of residents in the state of Georgia.

The gig economy is going mainstream! The JPMorgan Chase Institute released a new study which found that 10.6 million Americans are making money using web-based platforms like Uber and Airbnb, which is more than 6% of the American workforce! Just who are these Americans? Apparently they’re millennials, aged 25-34, mostly dudes, living on the West Coast, and have an average median income of $2,800 a month.

  1. You can now stop going to the gas station. Forever.

Meet GasNinjas. Hail a gas ninja through their app, and they’ll come to you and fill your car with a full tank of gas. They’re like the Uber for gas delivery. Uber for gas delivery. Genius. They’re only in Miami right now, but I’m sure they’ll be all over the map soon!

  1. Amazon continues to grow it’s on-demand delivery services

Amazon Flex

Amazon’s Flex delivery services is now available in 14 cities, including Seattle, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Dallas. This service basically lets Amazon have people deliver packages for them faster and cheaper than paying UPS or FedEx. According to Amazon, drivers who sign up to deliver their packages can earn $18 to $25 an hour. These couriers are considered independent contractor though, so they’ll need their own 4-door car, car insurance, and pay for their own gas.

  1. Amazon also does restaurant food delivery

Is there anything delivery-related that Amazon won’t touch? Amazon’s Prime Now service just added Seattle as the seventh city where you can get restaurant orders delivered to you. The other six cities include Chicago, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Austin, and Portland, Oregon (my hometown!). If you have an Amazon Prime membership, you can get this service.

  1. Google starts on-demand grocery delivery service

Forget Amazon. Is there anything Google won’t touch? Apparently not, because they just launched Google Express in San Francisco and Los Angeles to provide same-day delivery for grocery.

Check these gigs out if you get bored driving for the same platform week in and week out.
