DoorDash Innovates With #DoorDashTastes

#DoorDashTastes launched this week in Atlanta and Miami. For this event, DoorDash partnered with local restaurants to bring exclusive five dollar deals to DoorDash app and web customers. Friday was the last day of the promotion, which included free delivery using city-specific promo codes.

Miami #DoorDashTastes

The menu for the Miami Restaurant Week was:

  • Spring Chicken’s Yardbird Sandwich
  • EAT’s Signature Meatloaf
  • Green Berry’s Organic Acai Bowl
  • Firehouse subs
  • Pink Subs subs
  • Subrageous subs
  • Burrito San
  • Graziano’s
  • Honeybee Donuts
  • Choices Café

Interestingly, DoorDash only launched in Miami last February, making its presence in the city fairly recent.

Atlanta #DoorDashTastes

The menu for Atlanta was:

  • Silverspoon Catering’s BBQ Pork Chop with Mac and Cheese
  • Grub Burger’s Front Porch Burger
  • Dickey’s Big Barbecue Burger
  • Mellow Mushroom pizza

DoorDash deals

While Restaurant Week appears to be a test run, it’s unclear whether DoorDash has plans to expand the promotion outside Miami and Atlanta. However, Restaurant Week is only one in a long list of innovations and experiments DoorDash has been trying. For instance, this summer, they partnered with Baskin-Robbins to deliver ice cream, after pilots in Chicago and Los Angeles proved successful.

In an attempt at goodwill, DoorDash also delivered ice cream treats to children in hospitals during its ice cream promotional period.

DoorDash has also done iced latte promotionals at the beginning of August. More recently, it was giving Half Moon Cookies in select areas during last week’s solar eclipse (almost as good as being in the path of totality, right NYC?).

Other DoorDash innovations include the move to having robots deliver food, which entered the scene in California last March. DoorDash assured its Dashers that they were not being replaced by machines, which were created through a partnership with Starship Technologies. For their robotics program, DoorDash built an algorithm to determine whether it made more sense for a human or a robot to take an order. Deciding factors included distance and the terrain between pick up and delivery. Other robot programming included the ability of the customer to have the unique ability to remove the food once it was inside the robot.

Alcohol delivery

BJ’s Restaurant in California also recently announced that it would be partnering with DoorDash to have online ordering. The partnership also made BJ’s one of the first national restaurants to offer on-demand delivery for craft beers. The partnership includes an offering of 25 different wines and five craft beers.

Hashtag DoorDash

DoorDash also seems to be keen on using hashtags. #DoorDashTastes was only one in a line of hashtag promotions this summer.

Their #DinnerIsComing was a Game of Thrones inspired sweepstakes in July that had a prize of a $500 feast for two. Earlier this month, we saw #BringMeBagels, announcing a DoorDash partnership with Noah’s NY Bagels. Although the partnership allowed ordering from more than 45 locations, the hashtag was tied to a sweepstakes to win a year’s supply of bagels.

DoorDash definitely seems to be enjoying its creative marketing and business strategies. It’s hard to guess what they’ll dream up next.
