Everything You Need To Know About Saucey

Updated: 06/23/2021

Saucey is an alcohol delivery service that offers delivery to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento and Chicago with intentions to expand elsewhere, including New York City. Couriers deliver alcohol after 12 p.m. until as late as 1 a.m. on some nights. Customers can choose a variety of alcoholic beverages, snacks and cigars from the app or website. A Saucey Courier is expected to deliver within a half hour.

History and Funding

Saucey was founded in 2013 by Andrew Zeck, Chris Vaughn and Daniel Leeb. The company is in its third round of funding—Series A—and has raised $10,200,000 to date. Its main investors have been Blumberg Capital and Bullpen Capital.

The Saucey team started their business model by running delivery themselves, for a liquor store that had previously offered delivery but was under new ownership. After they learned what would or wouldn’t work for them as far as traditional delivery, they evaluated several gig economy platforms, including other alcohol delivery services Drizly and Minibar. While other alcohol delivery services contracted with liquor stores, essentially handling only the delivery part, Saucey opted for a different approach. They handle the whole process—from order to delivery—making for a much more comprehensive service that can employ more people.

Saucey has had some pretty nonstandard marketing schemes as well. For example, one of Saucey’s campaigns featured alcohol delivered by a Frank Sinatra impersonator.

How Much Can You Make with Saucey?

A Saucey Courier often earns around $10+ per hour. Saucey, like GrubHub, allows you to sign up for specific shift blocks. Couriers earn a rate of $5 per delivery, plus 50 cents per item, plus a tip. So if your customer has four items, you’ll make $7, independent of tip. Couriers have reported an average tip of around $6. Since the orders for alcohol cost more than, say, McDonald’s, and many customers tip based on percentage, Saucey couriers can tend to expect higher tips than other platforms may offer.

Saucey’s hours are 12 p.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Hours for Friday and Saturday are until 1 a.m. Sunday hours are until 10 p.m. A Saucey Courier can choose which neighborhoods they want to deliver to, and Saucey will keep their orders within a 3-5 mile radius of the location they choose.

Job Requirements

Saucey drivers must be at least 21 years old, have a reliable vehicle (model year 2007 or newer), and have an iPhone or Android phone that is no more than two years old. You must also have a clean driving record and auto insurance. The company also wants couriers to have flexible availability, including nights and weekends.

Another thing to keep in mind is that since Saucey delivers alcohol, couriers will have to check IDs on customers when they make deliveries (before they hand the customer the alcohol).

The company also values excellent customer service. Applicants must describe why they would be a great courier. The company values those with customer service or gig economy experience and a friendly attitude. Saucey requires couriers to maintain a 4.8 of 5 customer rating—a higher requirement than many platforms. Couriers should have the customer service skills to keep customers happy.

The company provides couriers with training, a cooler bag, and a hands-free phone mount for in your vehicle. Saucey does not provide uniforms, but this platform presents itself as a bit higher end, so couriers may want to consider dressing nicer.
