DoorDash Is Considering Expanding Into Europe Through Acquisitions

Some people with insider knowledge about DoorDash have leaked to Bloomberg that DoorDash is looking to do business in Europe. The company is inquiring to acquire a food delivery brand already operating in Europe, particularly Germany or the UK.

Eat or Dash Alone

It was also shared that DoorDash is looking to expand its grocery delivery services in Europe. It’s looking to gobble up another company through acquisition. However, if it doesn’t make any deal, it could just go alone into that market.

Food Fight In Europe

Europe is emerging as a massive battleground for food delivery companies. Various brands are raising large sums of venture capitalist money to expand their services outside of their founding country.

Germany’s Gorillas, UK’s Deliveroo, and the Netherlands’ Just Eat Takeaway are the leading players in that continent. Finland’s Wolt earlier this year raised a whopping $530 million to expand into other countries. Turkey’s Getir raised $300 million last month

Uber Eats, one of DoorDash’s main competitors in the United States, also does a lot of business in Europe, particularly in the UK.

Food Delivery Consolidations

All over the world, we see signs of recovery from COVID as populations are vaccinated. Brands are expecting to see declines in demand for their delivery services.

Let’s face it; the COVID-19 pandemic was probably the opportunity of a lifetime for delivery services like DoorDash. So what’s over the horizon for food delivery? It looks to be consolidating domestically and new markets overseas.

We’ve seen a lot of consolidation in recent years also. DoorDash acquired Caviar. Uber acquired Postmates. Just Eat Takeaway acquired Grubhub.

There’s going to be many more food fights in the post-COVID era; we can be sure.

For couriers, this could mean that another brand could absorb the platforms they depend on for an income. A perfect example would be Caviar drivers.

It would be wise for food delivery gig workers to consider mastering multiple platforms to avoid learning curves should their platform get acquired. Couriers interested in doing food delivery gigs long term should research other brands in their market, sign-up, and learn how to excel on those platforms.
